Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda: Why it’s one of the best places to go gorilla trekking
Volcanoes National Park is a haven for Rwanda’s mountain gorillas. The park was home to the primatologist and conservationist Dian Fossey whose work on gorillas is still considered a benchmark in today’s gorilla conservation models.
The Volcanoes National Park borders Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the Congo’s Virunga National Park, although these two locations are less reliable (or in the case of the Congo, less safe) than Uganda’s premier destination for mountain gorilla tourism: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.
When is the best time to trek gorillas?
Volcanoes National Park has a tropical climate, and temperatures range from 5 to 26 degrees Celsius (about 40 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit). Rainfall is the primary consideration, as heavy rains can make trekking quite difficult. There are two rainy seasons: March to April, and September to November. It’s generally best to avoid planning a Rwanda safari during these months.
