Do I need the Yellow Fever Vaccine?

Sasakwa Day 10

Do I need the Yellow Fever Vaccine?

Yellow Fever is on the decline in Africa, but remains a risk in certain sub-Saharan countries. We recommend following the recommendations of the Center for Disease Control.
Countries requiring proof of vaccination as a condition for visas that are most relevant for Completely Unique Safaris guests:

Uganda
Kenya, if you are traveling from Uganda (or another country with Yellow Fever risk). If you are traveling directly to Kenya from the USA or EU, proof of vaccination is not required
Rwanda, if you are traveling from Uganda (or another country with Yellow Fever risk). If you are traveling directly to Rwanda from the USA or EU, proof of vaccination is not required

If you have had an electronic visa issued and provided proof of your vaccination online, you still need to carry your physical card with you while traveling.

If you have already had a Yellow Fever vaccination in the past and are curious about how long it lasts, the World Health Organization announced in 2016 that the vaccine is now good for a person’s lifetime, so no booster is needed. However, if you have lost your Yellow Fever Card, you will need to have the vaccine re-administered or, if possible, contact the clinic where you first obtained the vaccine to issue a new card.

Yellow Fever Vaccine Contraindications and Waivers

If you are traveling to a country where there is Yellow Fever risk, you should in nearly every case obtain your vaccination. There are some medical contraindications to the vaccine that can be discussed with your physician. Visa entry programs will consider a medical waiver that has been authorized in the appropriate manner, however, the waiver should never be used for the purposes of convenience.

Temporary Yellow Fever Vaccine Shortage

The manufacturer of the Yellow Fever vaccine, Sanofi-Pasteur, announced in mid-2017 that the vaccine’s supply would be disrupted throughout mid-2018 due to moving production to a new facility. They have worked with the US FDA to make an alternative vaccine available, called Stamaril, that is already approved in 70 other countries. However, due to the disruption, Stamaril is available in fewer locations than the original vaccine. To locate a clinic, use the CDC website: Search for Yellow Fever Vaccination Clinics.

Due to this temporary situation, it is important to plan in advance to obtain your Yellow Fever vaccination and card.
